Hello I’m new to mosses and I found your site when I was looking for moss for a terrarium. I ordered one of your terrarium kits, it has been really great so far I love watching the eco-system change and grow. Last week I noticed a change in my terrarium, I thought it was mold but I have since changed my opinion. I have a film of web like…

Hi! We just added a cedar barrel sauna to our backyard in Adirondacks, NY. I would love to have a moss “cushion” at the sauna entrance (and a whole moss lawn for that matter but that’s a bigger project!)
We have 17 acres and lots of moss that I can harvest sustainably. My concern is the substrate. Our backyard is very shady and the soil is sandy.… -

Hi Annie. I love moss and love your book, and am very excited to get started creating pockets of mossy refuge of my own. The place I’m eyeing first is under a kousa dogwood tree. It is well shaded during the summer but not in the winter. There is already some fern-like moss growing there mixed in with the grass, and I saw your answer to a previous…

Hello!
I’m down in Charlotte and have been cultivating a moss lawn for the last 3 years that started naturally in my backyard. My lawn is mostly made up of Pleurozium Scherberi and I am noticing patches of it are turning white. It looks like bleach has been poured on it in spots. It isn’t powdery mildew. I water for a few minutes each day… -

Hi Annie,
I created a 12′ Cob Lizard in my garden this spring. Cob is a mixture of natural clay, sand and straw) I would like to encourage moss to grow on it. I have already tried the buttermilk/moss concoction with little success, and I’m considering buying sheets of living moss. I live in Durham NC, and am wondering how I can safely attach… -

Hi Annie – I love what you are doing as I love moss like you do… I am growing a moss lawn, definitely a challenge with the birds, but I love caring for it – maybe too much more than I like doing other things
Anyway, my next moss project is to make a painting-sized wallhanging for indoor enjoyment. I am wondering about the best substrate for…

I’m struggling with (what I think is) Atrichum undulatum. It grows in happy little patches around my woods but when I attempt to keep it indoors it dies off. I keep the soil its growing on as its substrate, use distilled water to mist, (our tap is hard well water) and tried many different levels of lighting. Any tips? Should I be doing something…

I live in southeast Michigan and want to plant moss between my flagstone. It’s part sun and shade. What type of moss do you suggest?

Hi.
I’m wondering how well mosses…and lichens and liverworts… can survive regular innudation. Several years ago I studied the growth on a fallen log in the river bottom forrest of the Red River in Manitoba. It was amazingly abundant, covered in mosses, lichen, liverworts and fungi… a joy to behold. But this log was in an unusual place; it…

Greetings JB5000… Bonsai enthusiasts typically choose Ceratodon purpureus and Bryum argeteum which are tiny, upright-growing moss colonies. They feel like velvet. If you want to use sideways moss species, I recommend Entodon seductrix. It is a shiny, flat moss and would offer the illusion of a lawn under your Ficus Bonsai creation. Entodon…

Hello. I was looking for moss for around the base of a bonsai tree. It’s an indoor tree, but it gets relatively frequent watering and the soil stays moist (it is a ficus) – it has steady indoor temps of 60-75 and an artificial grow light (lack of much natural sun, but the tree grows well with the artificial light). It also gets some misting for…

I’m endeavoring to create some moss paths in my front yard. I plan on digging up lanes about 18″ wide in my scraggly grass down to the dirt, laying down about 1/2″ of newsprint(my brother has given me past issues of the NYT and I have several bags full), covering that with about 1″ of dirt and setting the moss directly on the dirt. I will line…

Hey Jill, There are so many moss species that could work for your bulb containers. You might try Thuidium which looks like tiny delicate fern fronds. Entodon (flat, shiny moss) tolerates more sun which might be important for “forced” bulbs that require sunlight to emerge and bloom. Both of these species are sideways growing species. If you are…

Hi! Just wondering what the best moss would be to use in containers for forced bulbs? Also, how/can this be most easily propogated? thanks!

Hi Annie, I’ve often thought about growing moss instead of a lawn. I live about 30 miles east of Cameron NC (28326) and I get a lot of full sun exposure. What types of moss would (might?) grow for me? I’ve also started a mini orchard so eventually it will be sun and shade on one part of the yard.

I am wanting to expand my patch of Polytrichum juniperinum in my garden. I have tried a few things unsuccessfully.
Is there a preferred method that you recommend? can you chop it up and scatter it the way that seems to work with other mosses? I have tried chopping and blending with chopped, dried sphagnum, as well as “transplanting” small… -

Will I be able to plant moss on bare red clay? I was thinking mood moss and pincushion moss.
Hi I bought your book recently, and read a little about the ph soil being somewhat important and that you also said that clay is basic and just a little confused about whether this will work or not. I have also seen in places that you can grow moss on…

Hi Annie, I have built some homemade stairs on a steep incline in my yard Seattle, out of pavers and plants and dirt. there are some ugly vertical spaces between the steps and I was hoping to grow some moss there. This hill gets a lot of sun, but there are some shady spots from the plants that I put there. Do you have any recommendations for type…

I’m looking for recommendations. I live in NH and I’m building a Japanese garden. I have an area 30’x30′ I’m looking to cover with moss. The space gets primarily full sun. One portion is a slope down into my koi pond. The area doesn’t have to be all the same species.
I’d like species that spread so I could save some money not having to buy…
